The Electric Vehicle Battery Health Debate Emerges as Argentina’s EV Market Accelerates

Argentina’s electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with 4,490 fully electric units registered in the first seven months of 2026. This represents a staggering 880% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. While this surge is significant, EVs still constitute a modest 1.4% of the total automotive market, originating from a very low baseline of 458 units in the prior year. This initial boom, however, is just the prologue to a longer narrative that will soon involve the secondary market, presenting new challenges and opportunities for dealerships and consumers alike.

As EVs become more prevalent on Argentine streets and in showrooms, the question of their long-term viability and resale value will inevitably shift focus. A critical component of this discussion, already well underway in more mature automotive markets, is the health and longevity of EV batteries. Determining the remaining capacity of a used EV battery is becoming a crucial factor in its purchase and sale, and countries like China are taking proactive steps to establish clear evaluation standards.

China Leads the Way with New Battery Durability Standards

In July 2026, China implemented a new national recommended standard, published in late 2025, that outlines common requirements and methodologies for assessing the durability of batteries in light electric vehicles. This standard, developed through collaboration between technical bodies, automotive manufacturers, and battery giants such as BYD and CATL, alongside international players like Toyota, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW, aims to bring much-needed clarity to battery performance evaluation.

A key reference point within this standard is the State of Certified Energy (SOCE). SOCE measures the usable energy a battery retains relative to its original certified capacity. The standard also establishes a method for cross-referencing the vehicle’s internal battery data with physical measurements, capping potential overestimations at a narrow five percentage points.

For passenger cars, the standard sets minimum benchmarks for usable energy: 82% after five years or 100,000 kilometers, 75% after eight years or 160,000 kilometers, and 70% after ten years or 200,000 kilometers. These benchmarks are designed to provide concrete metrics for a variable that will become increasingly vital as EVs transition into the used car market.

Claudio Damiano, an electromobility specialist, commented on the impact of such regulatory environments. "These norms are highly beneficial for consumers," Damiano stated in an interview with LA NACION. "They drive the market towards offering higher quality products and accelerate the pace of improvement more than a market could on its own." However, Damiano also acknowledged potential resistance from some industry players. "There are those who complain, like sellers, who argue that such regulations can create an impression of rapid obsolescence, affecting not only used vehicles but also new models."

The Battery as the New Mileage: Understanding State of Health (SOH)

In conventional vehicles, mileage has long been a primary indicator for used car buyers, offering a quantifiable measure of usage. For electric vehicles, the battery’s condition is paramount. This is where the concept of State of Health (SOH) becomes central. SOH is an indicator designed to estimate the remaining capacity of a battery compared to its original state. It is crucial to distinguish SOH from the battery’s current charge level displayed on the dashboard. A battery can be at 100% charge while simultaneously having lost a significant portion of its original capacity.

"An analysis of the battery’s health provides an idea of the real kilowatt-hour capacity the battery can retain," explained Damiano. "The important point is that this does not directly translate into kilometers of range." He further elaborated, "To convert that capacity into achievable mileage, numerous factors come into play, such as driving style, speed, external temperature, terrain topography, and a host of other factors related to vehicle usage."

International regulations acknowledge that battery aging is influenced by a multitude of variables, including temperature, charging patterns, usage habits, thermal management systems, and even parasitic energy drains that occur even when the vehicle is stationary. This complexity means that two EVs of the same model, year, and mileage may not have batteries in identical condition when they reach the pre-owned market.

Global Data Suggests Battery Degradation is Manageable

Despite the inherent variability, data from markets with a longer history of EV adoption suggests that battery degradation may not be as alarming as some anticipate. A study conducted by the Swedish company Carla, which analyzed 9,954 battery tests between 2022 and 2026, revealed encouraging results. On average, the vehicles studied retained 98.6% of their battery health within the first 10,000 kilometers, 94.4% at 50,000 kilometers, and 92.4% around 100,000 kilometers. While the study noted variations between different models and battery technologies, it concluded that capacity loss does not necessarily follow a linear progression.

The challenge, therefore, is not the inherent deterioration of all used EV batteries, but rather the ability to accurately assess and demonstrate the health of individual batteries. This is where independent diagnostics become invaluable. "Until a regulation mandating the verification of battery health is fully implemented in Argentina, the best course of action is to conduct an independent battery analysis," advised Damiano. "This examination is relatively accessible and quick. Virtually any EV with a diagnostic port, which is nearly 99% of them, can undergo this SOH analysis."

Furthermore, a strong battery health report can benefit the owner. "Good battery health is one of the factors contributing to the improved resale price of electric vehicles," Damiano noted. "Previously, the resale value of an EV was significantly lower than that of a combustion engine vehicle, but this gap is now narrowing."

The Nascent Used EV Market in Argentina

This global discussion on battery health stands in stark contrast to the current reality in Argentina, where the used EV market is still in its infancy. Alejandro Lamas, secretary of the Chamber of the Automotive Commerce (CCA), stated, "There is no used EV market yet; it cannot be seriously considered. It is very incipient, and a much larger critical mass will need to form."

Lamas’s assessment explains why metrics like SOH, SOCE, or battery certificates are not yet part of the standard conversation for used car transactions in Argentina. "Dealerships do not yet have experience with this," Lamas explained. "They are not accepted as trade-ins anywhere. We can only look at the experiences of markets with more established practices, such as in Europe or the United States."

In these more mature markets, initial resistance has already emerged. "Official traceability and the vehicle’s overall condition are fundamental," Lamas added, referring to international used EV markets. "There are many questions regarding costs and a considerable amount of confusion."

The ultimate question remains what will happen when the volume of used EVs in Argentina begins to grow. Dealerships will soon face the same challenges that operators in more developed markets are currently grappling with: how to accurately value a used EV, assess its battery condition, certify that assessment, and determine how its price compares to seemingly identical units.

Lamas cautioned, however, that no single indicator will ever replace a comprehensive valuation. "There is no single method for valuing a car," he concluded. "Averages, the expert’s eye, or an algorithm fed with information are not sufficient on their own. It is a combination of all factors." As Argentina’s EV market matures, the focus on battery health will undoubtedly transition from a niche concern to a mainstream consideration, mirroring the evolution seen in established global markets. The development of clear standards, accessible diagnostic tools, and experienced professionals will be critical in navigating this next phase of the electric revolution in the country.
