COLUMBUS, Ind. – Those who went to Columbus to see Republican Congressman Mike Pence as he launched his campaign for governor got more than a speech. They also got a down home meal and a whole lot of country music. Pence clearly wanted to send the message that he’s a regular guy with Hoosier values.
He launched his bid to lead the state in his hometown of Columbus Indiana. In the perfectly orchestrated affair, no detail was forgotten – from the free fried chicken lunches complete with biscuits and apple butter, to the country and western tune that welcomed Pence to the stage.
Rodney Atkins’ “These are my People” blared from the speakers as Pence shook hands with a throng of supporters. Pence wasn’t wearing a suit and tie. Instead, he donned a button down shirt with rolled up sleeves. Every detail was meant to send the message that Mike Pence hasn’t forgotten his small town southern Indiana roots.
“I’m Mike Pence. I’m running for governor of Indiana,” Pence said as supporters applauded wildly.
He delivered a speech filled with references to faith and family – making no secret of the social issues he holds dear.
“As your governor, I will stand for the sanctity of life, the sanctity of traditional marriage, and the importance of religion in our everyday life,” Pence told the room of about 250 people.
The message was exactly what many in the audience wanted to hear. Wayne Rowley drove an hour and a half from Lapel.
“He says that he’s a Christian first then a conservative then a Republican,” said Rowley.
But ever mindful of those calling for fiscal discipline, Pence praised Governor Mitch Daniels – promising to stay the course. According to high school classmate and supporter Joe Swaim, it was a speech decades in the making – a speech for which he began his preparation on the speech team at Columbus North High School.
He was a good public speaker and still is a good public speaker. Look where he’s at,” said Swaim.
Yes, it’s clear Pence likes where he is. He’s on the path to where he hopes to be – a mansion in Indianapolis.
Pence has campaign events planned throughout the summer. He’ll make stops at county fairs across the state and plans appearances in 4th of July parades.
